MEDICAL MAGNET PROGRAM
2013-2014 Magnet Program Goals:

Increase enrollment

Publicize and promote positive aspects of magnet program within the district

Promote our school throughout the community and city

Enrich our students’ education with real world experiences
Proposal:
-
Establish a working relationship between our campus and all elementary campuses by having our top students visit science class-rooms each six weeks and perform lab activities with the 5th grade classes.

Continue to have an Annual Science Fair hosted at our campus and invite all elementary and middle school campuses to participate.

Establish a Math Bowl to be hosted on our campus and invite all elementary and middle school campuses to participate.

Establish a club or organization which will allow students to volun-teer within the community and city to promote our campus and pro-gram. For example, at the Nutrition Center or visits to Nursing Homes.

Establish a Shadowing Program for our top students to shadowing a medical professional in the field of study they are interested in pursuing.


Magnet students have the opportunity to earn up to 6 high school credits:
Algebra I, Geometry
IPC, Biology
Principles of Health Science
Speech
Health
*Students will receive High School credit only if they complete the High School Medical Program.
The WR Smith Science and Medical Technology Magnet is seeking academically talented students with interest in science tech-nology and the medical professions.
The Magnet Component emphasizes science, mathematics and medical technology.
The curriculum will integrate advanced technology into specific science medical courses. Students will experience extensive “hands-on” and “real-life” learning and training in the courses.
The variety of honors courses will allow students the opportunity to earn up to 6 high school credits and advanced status as they enter the High School of Medical Professions at Central High School.
