W. R. Smith Sr. Middle School

How We Began....

Willie Ray Smith Sr. was a Southeast Texas educator and state football icon. He began his coaching career in 1942 at Dunbar High School in Lufkin, Texas. After coaching for four years, Coach Smith went to Orange Wallace where he coached until 1957. In 1957, he began an eighteen-year coaching career at Charlton-Pollard High School in Beaumont. Coach Smith retired from coaching in 1976 after winning 235 games with a 'tough discipline' philosophy. He was instrumental in establishing the Beaumont area as a formidable football region. During his 33 season career, he won two state championships.

Building on the standard of excellence emblazoned by our school's namesake, students at the Willie Ray Smith Science & Medical Technology Magnet Middle School are preparing themselves for careers in the health industry. Smith's programs prepare students to succeed in the medical field. Students graduating from Smith's Magnet Program leave prepared for further studies at Central Medical Magnet High School. They receive high school credit for preparatory medical courses and advanced status as they enter high school. The magnet curriculum integrates advanced technology into specific medical courses and students' experience hands-on training and learning. Professionals in the medical field mentor students in our magnet program. Core courses are also taught with the integration of the medical profession and technology.

Smith is the only middle school in Beaumont that is evolving to a 1 to 1 technology program with iPads issued to each student and teacher for educational use.
